How to Say "Forex Trader" in Hawaiian (and Why I Even Looked It Up)

So, funny story—I've been on this Hawaiian language kick lately. Yep, your girl has been hanging out with Duolingo, stumbling her way through words like 'āina (land) and aloha (okay, that one was a gimme). Why? Well, living in Hawaii and all, I figured I should probably know more than just how to order a poke bowl or yell "chee-hoo" at the beach. Plus, it feels like a small but meaningful way to connect with the culture and community here.

Anyway, the other day, mid-Duolingo lesson (where I was crushing "Where is the bathroom?" in Hawaiian, thank you very much), I got this random thought: How would you say "forex trader" in Hawaiian? You know, because when you're a trader, even your daydreams are weirdly work-adjacent.

So, I did what anyone would do—I put on my detective hat (Google, obviously) and went down a little rabbit hole. And let me tell you, the Hawaiian language didn’t disappoint. Turns out, “forex trader” in Hawaiian is mea kālepa kālā kūwaho.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Mea - Person or someone who does something

  • Kālepa - Trade or trader

  • Kālā - Money or currency

  • Kūwaho - Foreign or outside

Put it all together, and you’ve got "person who trades foreign money." How cool is that? It’s simple, elegant, and has that poetic Hawaiian vibe that makes even talking about money feel like an art form.

Mea kālepa kālā kūwaho

Why This Matters (It doesn't)

While I was nerding out over this translation, I had a little “WTF is my life” moment- the weed didn't help.. Like, how did I go from blowing trading accounts left and right (seriously, I could’ve written a How Not to Trade manual) to not only figuring this whole thing out but now teaching it? Nuts!! Either way, here we are.

And honestly, it’s kind of poetic. Living in Hawaii has been this wild mix of slowing down, embracing chaos, and finding the humor in it all—because, let’s face it, if you can’t laugh at your own ridiculousness, what’s the point? So, blending my love for this island with, well, work, feels oddly satisfying. Like life finally served me a little side of irony with my spam musubi. Full circle? Sure. Or at least a very scenic spiral. 🌺

Let’s Wrap This Up: A Little Aloha for Your Day

So, now you know: "Mea kālepa kālā kūwaho" is how you say forex trader in Hawaiian. Whether you’re also navigating your trading journey or just trying to learn a new skill (like not yelling at your charts when the market moves against you), this little nugget of language magic is here to remind you to keep things light and keep learning.

And because I can’t sign off without being a little extra:

Aloha nui loa,

Erica Lorrai (& Chief, my furball who’s zero percent impressed by any of this)

P.S. If you’re on Duolingo learning Hawaiian, hit me up!
