Both get posted with the same confidence and neither tells you anything useful, so let's just do the math ourselves. What 5% a week actually compounds to over a year. Start with $1,000, make 5%, then make 5% again and you don't make another fifty bucks. That's compounding, and it's boring for a lot longer than anyone tells you before it stops being boring. But the calculator also lies by omission, and one of the things it never shows you is quietly costing you money right now. Most of us pick the dollar number first. Two hundred bucks, or fifty, whatever would make the session feel worth it. Then we go hunting for a trade that produces it. Problem is a dollar amount means nothing on a chart, because charts move in pips. This one converts the money back into a distance, and then you get to go look and see whether that distance is even out there today. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the number tells you something you'd rather not hear.

You can have a hundred trades logged and still have no idea whether you're any good at this. One trade tells you nothing, because the market will happily reward you for breaking every rule you have. So we stop asking "did that trade work" and start asking "what happens when I do this over and over." That takes a pile of trades and some arithmetic. You risk $100 to make $200. How often do you have to be right for that to add up to nothing? Most people say half, because half sounds like the fair answer. It's a third. One winner pays for two losers and you're back where you started. This is the bit of math that made me stop caring about win rate on its own, and it's also the reason a 70% win rate can quietly lose you money.

You took 50 trades and won 29. That's 58%. The math takes four seconds. The problem is 58% doesn't tell us whether you made a dollar, because you can win four out of five trades and still be bleeding out. So let's get the number, and then let's talk about the number it actually has to beat before it means anything at all.

Nobody likes talking about losing streaks. Winning streaks? Absolutely. We will discuss those at brunch. But five losses in a row? Suddenly everyone has somewhere else to be. The problem is that losing streaks are completely normal — even for a profitable trading method. If your method doesn't win 100% of the time, consecutive losses aren't evidence that the universe has singled you out for punishment. They're math.

You just took a loss. And now you want it back. Like, right now. So you open another trade. Maybe you size up a little — because if you just hit this one, you're back to even. That's revenge trading. You win 45% of your trades, your winners average 2R, your losers average 1R. Good? Bad? You honestly can't tell by looking at it, which is annoying, because those are the three numbers everyone throws around. Expectancy folds all three together and tells you what one trade has actually been worth. It also tells you when the strategy you designed and the strategy you're really trading are two different things. That part's uncomfortable but you'd rather know.

Your account hit $10,000 and it's at $8,000 now, so you're down two grand. Which tells you almost nothing, because two grand means something completely different on a $10,000 account than a $100,000 one. What you want is how far you've fallen from your peak, not your deposit, and most people measure that wrong the first time. Let's sort out what the number actually is, what to compare it against, and what to do when it comes out bigger than your history says it should.

If your account loses 50%, you need a 100% gain to get back to where you started. Yes. Math has chosen violence. A lot of new traders assume gains and losses work symmetrically. Lose 10%? Make 10%. Lose 25%? Make 25%. Lose 50%? Make 50%. Unfortunately, no. The deeper an account falls, the larger the percentage gain required to recover. Understanding this is one of the best arguments for controlling risk before a drawdown gets ugly.

Setting a 90 pip goal is easy. Knowing where you actually stand by Thursday, after a good day, a no-trade day, and a few pips given back, is where it gets fuzzy. This does the arithmetic so you're not doing it in your head with a position open. It'll also tell you what you'd need to average over your remaining sessions, which is useful right up until you start treating it like an instruction.
