Most of us pick a take-profit because it looks good, or because there's a round number sitting nearby. Then we squeeze the stop in around it and call that a plan. This one works the other way. Tell it where you're getting in and where you're wrong, and it tells you exactly where price has to go to pay you double, or triple, what the trade can cost you. Then you take that number back to the chart and find out whether the market has any intention of going there.

Taking partial profits means closing part of your position at one target while leaving the rest open for additional targets. It can be a useful way to manage a trade — but the percentages matter, because every piece you close changes what remains available to profit from the rest of the move. Let's make the math easy.

You risk $100 to make $200. How often do you have to be right for that to add up to nothing? Most people say half, because half sounds like the fair answer. It's a third. One winner pays for two losers and you're back where you started. You took 50 trades and won 29. That's 58%. The math takes four seconds. You win 45% of your trades, your winners average 2R, your losers average 1R. Good? Bad? You honestly can't tell by looking at it, which is annoying, because those are the three numbers everyone throws around. Expectancy folds all three together and tells you what one trade has actually been worth. It also tells you when the strategy you designed and the strategy you're really trading are two different things. That part's uncomfortable but you'd rather know.

Win rate gets asked about constantly and it's close to useless on its own. You can be right 80% of the time and still lose money, or lose more trades than you win and be doing fine. Profit factor is the number that catches what win rate throws away: how much your winners actually made for every dollar your losers took.
